Lesson Plan: Understanding Columbus Day
Target Audience: A1 level English students
Duration: 60 minutes
Objectives:
Students will be able to understand the history and significance of Columbus Day

Pictures of Columbus, the ships he sailed, and the American continents
Map of the world
Whiteboard and markers
Warm-Up: (5 minutes)
Greet students and check in with their well-being
Show a picture of Columbus and ask students if they know who he is
Ask students if they know anything about Columbus Day
Presentation: (15 minutes)
Draw a map of the world on the whiteboard
Show students where Columbus was from and the places he discovered
Explain the history of Columbus Day and why it is celebrated
Introduce the vocabulary words related to Columbus Day and related topics (e.g. explorer, discovery, voyage, America)

Practice: (20 minutes)
Have students work in pairs

Production: (20 minutes)
Give each student a blank map of the world
Have students draw the route that Columbus took on his voyage
Have students label the different places he discovered
Have students use the vocabulary words in sentences to describe Columbus and his journey
Collect the maps and provide written feedback
Closure: (5 minutes)
Review the vocabulary words with the students
Ask students what they learned about Columbus Day
Provide some final thoughts and reminders for the next lesson
Gather the materials and dismiss the students.
