"The Chinese New Year is one of the most important traditional holidays in China and many other East Asian countries. It is a time for families to come together, exchange gifts, and share special meals. The celebration typically lasts for 15 days and is a time to say goodbye to the past year and welcome in the new one. Some common traditions associated with the Chinese New Year include cleaning the house, decorating with red lanterns and couplets, giving red envelopes filled with money, setting off fireworks, and participating in the Dragon and Lion dances. Overall, the Chinese New Year is a time for joy, unity, and good fortune."

Practice

Flashcard Game: Divide the students into pairs. Give each pair a set of vocabulary flashcards. The students take turns picking a flashcard and explaining the word to their partner. The partner has to guess the word.

Conversation Questions: Give the students handouts with conversation questions related to Chinese New Year. Have the students work in small groups and take turns asking and answering the questions.

Production

Role Play: Have the students prepare a short role play about Chinese New Year. They can choose different scenarios (e.g. a family preparing for the celebration, a group of friends having a reunion dinner). Give the students 10 minutes to prepare and then have them perform their role play for the class.

Final Reflection: Ask the students to reflect on what they have learned during the class and what they remember from the vocabulary and activities.

Assessment:

Observe students during the flashcard game, conversation questions, and role play to assess their understanding of the vocabulary and their listening and speaking skills.

Give a short quiz at the end of the class to check their understanding of the vocabulary and the topic.
